Uncommon ALS, as president, signed “Fr. Pierce,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, March 3, 1856. Letter to former New Hampshire governor John Steele. In full: “I think the battle in N.H. has been well and bravely fought. Our friends have earned a victory and ought to have one—but our strength is to a great degree in the remote rural districts and the condition of the roads will probably make great exertions necessary to secure the presence of all the Democratic voters at the polls. What are your prospects in Peterboro’ and the adjoining towns—Write me.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a slightly rough left edge. Letters from Pierce’s presidency are uncommon, with this one showing his dedication to his home state and determination to secure a Democratic victory.
