Description

The legendary director signs a photo from The Blue Bird and recounts a humorous story on the reverse

Glossy 8 x 10 photo of Cukor posing with Elizabeth Taylor on the set of The Blue Bird, signed and inscribed in green felt tip “For Karen and Roy from George-with every good wish,” adding “I look half-witted! Which I ain’t.” On the reverse, Cukor has added a lengthy ALS, addressed “Dearest Kate” [Katharine Hepburn] signed “George (The Brute).” Letter reads in part: “You asked me to send a comic message to Larry [Laurence Olivier]—This is the best I could do. Irene—rather ill-advisedly sent me ‘Kate’ what a stupid fool…After I’d read a direct quote from me about the famous spilling of ice cream completely running down her dress, Then she had to go and change into something much less appropriate…I slapped hard her across the face…and called her a mark and hopeless amateur;…That was Kate.” Cukor also adds “I’d like to give Mr. Higham a kick in the ass.” In very good condition, with scattered golding to darker areas of image and several ink lines through text on reverse. The letter’s recipient, Katharine Hepburn starred in The Corn is Green, directed by Cukor a few years later in 1979. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
