Description

Coolidge and his chief of staff smile during their brief tenure together

Vintage matte-finish 9 x 7 photo of Coolidge and his secretary C. Bascom Slemp exiting a building, signed in fountain pen by both men. Photo is affixed to its original 12 x 10.75 Harris and Ewing photographer’s mount. Scattered fingerprints and surface marks, not detracting from overall appearance, otherwise fine condition. Mount shows some light toning and minor damp staining along bottom edge.

Slemp was a six-time congressman from Virginia who had stepped away from the national political scene when Coolidge tapped him to serve as Secretary to the President of the United States—a position similar to the modern day White House Chief of Staff. He served in the position for 18 months before resigning in March 1925 following unresolved friction. This desirable Harris & Ewing image, showing the pair in a relatively amicable relationship, must most likely then date to that relatively brief period in the Coolidge administration. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
