Description

“I must have 8 or 9000 muskets…to accelerate this movement”

LS in French, signed “Napole,” one page, 7 x 9, April 21, 1806. Letter to his son, Prince Eugene Napoleon. In full: “My son, tell me how many muskets are in Palma nova, Mantoue and Peschiera, appurtenances belonging to the French artillery & the Italian artillery. I must have 8 or 9000 muskets at Plaisance that I ordered to be sent to Mantoue to accelerate this movement; they had been originally intended to Ancône, which was ridiculous.” Double matted and framed with a color portrait of Napoleon in royal garb, to an overall size of 19.5 x 15. In fine condition, with some scattered light creases and wrinkles, and a small area of toning to top left corner.

Prince Eugene de Beauharnais was the only son of Empress Josephine, the woman whom Napoleon had married in 1796. A decade later, the emperor sent this message to his adopted son after ordering General Jean-Andoche Junot to regain control of Italy’s Plaisance region. The area had revolted during the winter of 1805—a move that did not sit well with the recently self-proclaimed king of Italy—as he inquires here about the transfer of weapons needed “to accelerate this movement.” A unique ‘message’ from father to son. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
