A subject of JFK’s Profiles in Courage and the swing vote of Johnson’s impeachment

Kansas senator who was one of those called upon to decide whether Andrew Johnson should be convicted and removed from office after his impeachment in 1868, casting the nineteenth vote against. ALS signed “E. G. Ross,” one page, lightly-lined, 5.5 x 8, United States Senate Chamber letterhead, July 8, 1867. Letter to an unidentified General. In part: “I will watch the Bill you speak of. I endeavor to check its passage. I think, however, that there is no danger as there is a settled determination to do nothing except in the matter of reconstruction.” In very good condition, with trimmed top edge, scattered toning and soiling, a couple small edge tears, and a few small areas of surface loss.
