ALS, one page, lightly-lined both sides, 5 x 8, August 21, 1868. Letter to Dr. T. A. Cheney. In part: “In reply to your request that I should prosecute a suit for the violation of the copyright to your Historical Sketch, I would say that I sold my law library more than 20 years ago and quit the practice and never expect to engage in it again. I have never had any occasion to study the law relating to copyright and therefore I can give you no reliable advice.” Letter is archivally sleeved in acid-free Mylar. In fine condition, with a mild shade of uniform toning, and some light pencil remnants to top edge. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
