Description

The 90-year-old Battle Hymn of the Republic author has trouble with a sentence about Lincoln

ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 5.5, February 13, 1909. Letter to an unidentified gentleman. In part: “I wrote this enclosed paper immediately after receiving a letter asking me to send a sentence about Abraham Lincoln to the High School in Fall River. Presently, I lost sight of what I had written, lost sight also of the envelope sent for return, and had to finish my poem written for last evening's celebration. Yesterday, about noon time, I found the lost slip of paper, and telegraphed at once to High School, not remembering any other address. The only excuse for this is that I am very well-advanced in my ninetieth year, and that in consequence of this, my memory is very uncertain.” In fine condition, with a vertical fold to each page and a mild shade of uniform toning. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
