The court-martialed Union general provides sketches for a book on the rebellion

Union major general who fought at Antietam and Second Bull Run. Porter was court-martialed in 1863 for disobeying an order from Gen. Pope to attack but was exonerated in 1878. Partial self-contained ALS signed “F. J. Porter,” one page, 5 x 3.5, March 28, 1871. Letter reads, in part: “The sketches are at your service to use in any way you desire and I trust may be of service in a revision of your ‘Pictorial History of the Rebellion.’” In fine condition, with trimmed top edge, small vertical tear to top edge, and a few stray ink flecks.
