Description

Having just returned from a USO tour of North Africa, Landis sends her sympathies for a fallen soldier

Buxom Hollywood starlet (1919–1948) who committed suicide at the age of 29; by some accounts, her unrequited love for Rex Harrison was the source of her despair. ALS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead. Letter to a fan who just lost a relative in World War II. In full: “I just returned home after almost 3 months of camp shows & bond rallies, which is why I am so late in replying to your touching letter. I was in North Africa before April 6th and it is very possible that I was at the camp at which your cousin, Sgt. James S. Palen, was stationed. I wish I could write and tell you I had met him, but I honestly do not know whether or not I did. We met thousands of boys during our months of tours; some told us their names as we talked to them but most did not. I can only say that I am deeply sorry to hear of his death & send my sincere sympathy. I know that in spite of your loss, you are very proud of him.” In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
