McClellan writes to general Hancock he is too busy to attend an Aztec Club dinner

Union general (1826–1885) removed from command by Lincoln for his failure to exert pressure on Lee’s army during the crucial Peninsula Campaign. He ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 1864 and later served as Governor of New Jersey. ALS signed “Geo. B. McClellan,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, January 3, 1880. Letter to General Winfield Scott Hancock declining an invitation to the Aztec Club dinner. In part: “I have just received the card in relation to the Aztec Dinner—I am sorry that it happens at a time when it is out of my power to attend. I have a Legislation ‘pending.’” Letter is encased in protective Mylar. Intersecting folds, light toning, and docketing to reverse of second page, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
