Description

Scarce Richard Gatling letter on his ornate company letterhead

Inventor of the eponymous machine gun which has been estimated to have killed over 250,000 men since 1862. Rare ALS signed “R. J. Gatling,” one page, 5 x 8, ornate Gatling Gun Company letterhead, November 13, 1879. Letter to company treasurer Edgar Welles. In full: “I have employed Mr. Sanders to go to Europe and he says he can get ready to leave with me on Wednesday next. At least he sees nothing more to prevent his doing so–You can therefore secure passage for both of us. We are to pay his passage & traveling expenses and $100 per month—or that rate during the time he remains in our empty. Nothing new—I telegraph you tonight.” In fine condition, with a trivial brush to signature, and a touch of mild soiling. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
