Description

The legendary Impressionist offers a glimpse into the inspiration for his finest masterpieces

ALS in French, penned in bright purple ink, two pages, 5.25 x 8.25, Giverny par Vernon Eure, August 13, 1901. Letter to Mr. Alexander. In full: “I want to compliment you on the very beautiful article that my gardener suggested and we thank you for all you said about the artist and the gardener. I only regret that your visit was so short. I hope now that you know the way and that you will come back, especially when you are too tired of Paris. You only have to let me know and the gates will be open. Be assured of my cordial and sincere friendship.” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of toning, and several words of text a shade or two light due to irregular ink flow, but completely legible.

Without question, Monet’s greatest works were inspired by his garden at Giverny, and it was through its natural beauty that he created the motif that he would paint for the rest of his life. It forced Monet, in effect, to reverse what had been the traditional approach to painting as he experimented with color, light, and composition. The resulting images, including Water-Lily Pond, Irises in Monet’s Garden, and Monet Sunflowers, now hang in some of the greatest museums of the world. A marvelous glimpse into the master’s refuge and source of inspiration. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
