Description

The famed German composer pens five measures of a favorite Aryan opus, “The Mastersingers”

Extraordinary and extremely rare AMQS penned and signed in purple ink on an off-white 8.25 x 10.5 sheet, dated Bayreuth, December 21, 1879: the first five measures (for piano) of the opening theme from Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. One horizontal fold (not touching writing), light creasing at corners, subtle scattered wrinkles, and light soiling, otherwise fine condition. Housed in a custom red presentation folder.

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, or The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, is a three-act opera that Wagner wrote and composed, becoming one of his most popular works. Premiering in 1868, the lengthy opera is still highly regarded by a 21st century audience. Regrettably, Die Meistersinger was frequently used as part of Nazi propaganda, with the 1933 founding of the Third Reich celebrated with a performance of the opera in the presence of Hitler. Die Meistersinger was also the only opera presented at the Bayreuth festivals of 1943 and 1944. A notably scarce handwritten musical quotation. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
