Description

Politician and financial genius responsible for the formation of what is now known as the Ways and Means Committee. LS, one page both sides, 8 x 10, July 6, 1802. Circular letter issued to collectors on behalf of the Treasury Department. In part: “It is desirable that I should, at all times, possess a correct amount of outstanding debentures and of the times when they become payable…I have thereforeto request, that you will, as early as convenient, transmit to me the gross amount of all the debentures issued before the first day of the month and which then remain unpaid.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a mild overall shade of toning, and light show-through from text and docketing on reverse.
