Revered Norwegian playwright and poet (1828–1906) whose works, including A Doll’s House and Hedda Gabler, made him one of the seminal figures in the forefront of modern drama. Original vintage 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of the spectacled and heavily whiskered playwright, by E. Hohlenberg of Ostergarde, signed on the reverse in black ink. In fine condition, with a few edge dings, a touch of trivial soiling to reverse, and some light scuffing to image.
It is interesting that Ibsen would agree to sign this portrait, as he had a reputation for being rather abrasive...dare say “dramatic.” For friends or those who acted properly in his presence, however, the playwright was said to show an abundance of courtesy, a glimpse of which is likely evidenced here. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
