Vintage 4 x 5 photo of Jeffries in a pugilistic pose, signed in fountain pen, “Yours truly, Jas. J. Jeffries, 9/18/99.” In very good condition, with small hole and creasing to lower left corner, chip and smaller hole to top left corner, trimmed edges, a bit of trivial silvering.
On June 9, 1899, Jeffries defeated Bob Fitzsimmons during a bout in Brooklyn to become the the Heavyweight championship of the world. The following August, he embarked on a tour of Europe, putting on exhibition fights for fans, including a match on September 11—just a week before signing this image—against Jack Dunkhurst at the Haymarket Theatre in Liverpool. Jeffries is scarce in signed photos, and even scarcer signed as champion. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
