American statesman (1745–1829) who served variously as President of the Continental Congress, diplomat, and, from 1789 to 1795, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Partly printed DS, one page, 15 x 9.5, January 27, 1800. An appointment for Peter P. Ham as lieutenant of a company in the Regiment of Militia in Columbia County, New York. Countersigned by Daniel Hale as secretary. The document bears an embossed seal at upper left. In good to very good condition, with uniform overall toning, marginal chipping and areas of paper loss, thin line of vertical discoloration in left blank area, partial separations along intersecting folds (one slightly touching first letter of signature), a couple repairs to tears, and a few stains. The signature is clear and unaffected.
As the leader of the new Federalist Party, Jay served as governor of New York from 1795 to 1801, and became New York State's leading opponent of slavery. Also during this tenure, Jay earned a reputation of making appointments based on meritorious service rather than party affiliation. Historians generally concur that Jay’s appointments were all excellent choices of men who were fit for office. There is no doubt, then, that Mr. Ham here met some very high standards. RRAuction COA.
