Description

Polk sends a message to “His Majesty, the Emperor of China”

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, April 15, 1845. President Polk orders the Secretary of State “to affix the Seal of the United States to the envelope of a letter of credence to His Majesty the Emperor of China.” Several horizontal folds, a diagonal crease through last letter of signature, and some mild edge toning, otherwise an attractive document in fine condition.

As evidenced by this bit of international policy, US trade and treaties with China continued during the Polk Administration after having been started by his predecessor, John Tyler. In July 1844, Tyler signed the Treaty of Wanghia, a diplomatic agreement with the Qing Dynasty of China that furthered American business in that country and enhanced US trade. As a result, US relations were finally on par with the business conducted by the British Empire. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
