Description

“Mark what I say—Our adversaries have become desperate. The war is but just begun”

Intriguing ALS signed “J. K. P.,” one page, 8 x 6.25, no date. Letter addressed simply to “NB.” In full: “Mark what I say—Our adversaries have become desperate. The war is but just begun. This ambition & great hope is to carry…against the President’s supposed wishes & influence. They will give no quarter; and we must fight the battle like men. With a cause so good, victory must be ours.” Several intersecting folds, rough horizontal edges, and a pencil notation to lower left, otherwise fine condition.

Whatever political battle Polk refers to here, he certainly appears ready to fight the good fight. A future president himself, Polk was engaged in a number of political skirmishes as a US Representative and later as Speaker of the House. In the spring of 1830, for example, Congress passed a bill authorizing widespread internal improvement in government. Although President Andrew Jackson vetoed it, Polk assured that a measure to override the veto was squashed. As head of the House Ways and Means Committee, Polk also squared off against bank directors who admitted to fraud and corruption. An interesting, “ready for action” piece of correspondence from one of Jackson’s most trusted allies. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
