Description

Wright attends a Dayton celebration “on the anniversary of our first flight”

TLS, one page trimmed to 7.25 x 5.5, personal letterhead, December 14, 1938. Letter to Albert T. Bell declining an invitation to an engagement. In full: “I thank you for your letter of December 10th. The Dayton Chamber of Commerce has arranged a local celebration on the anniversary of our first flight which will keep me in Dayton on the seventeenth of December.” A light block of toning over left half of letter (and first three letters of the signature), and two office stamps to upper right, otherwise fine condition. Wright's signature is clear and dark.

Of course, the celebration refers to the 35th anniversary of the first manned flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903. Dayton newspaper accounts at the time recount not only the historic flight, but also reference the fact that Dayton’s then-67-year-old native son was still flying and working 10 hours a day. Interestingly, Orville’s guest at the dinner in his honor was none other than Henry Ford. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
