Fantastic hardcover autograph album, 5.5 x 7.5, signed inside by 215 notables, including three presidents, Union and Confederate officers, authors, politicians, and other notables. Signatures were acquired by the wife of a Civil War Major General as they traveled amongst the finest company of their era. Most pages bear several signatures each, some on affixed cards or slips, with all also back-to-back. Signers include: U. S. Grant, Andrew Johnson, James A. Garfield, Joshua Chamberlain, John C. Fremont, Winfield Scott Hancock, Oliver O. Howard, John A. Logan, Nelson A. Miles, William S. Rosencrans, Carl Schurz, Philip H. Sheridan, William T. Sherman, Daniel E. Sickles, Henry W. Slocum, George Henry Thomas, Lew Wallace, P. G. T. Beauregard, Jospeh E. Johnston, Fitzhugh Lee, William Mahone, Albert Pike, Nathaniel P. Banks, Henry Ward Beecher, Salmon P. Chase, Schuyler Colfax, Horace Greeley, John K. Porter, William H. Seward, Edward Stanton, Alexander Stephens, W. A. “Billy” Sunday, Gideon Welles, John S. Worden, Thaddeus Stevens, and Fitz John Porter. A more comprehensive list is available online at rrauction.com. Affixed to the last page is a war-dated pass issued by the Provost Marshal General’s Office in City Point, Virginia, to Mr. Shelly, granting him “permission to pass from these Headquarters within the lines and to Washington.” Affixed above that is a one week pass issued to Shelly to allow him “inside the fort and return.” The album’s covers are detached, missing portions of its spine, and show scattered light surface wear and edge chipping. The inside of pages of the album are in fine condition, with paper loss to three pages where signatures have been clipped and removed. RRAuction COA.
