Description

After too much food and drink, Remington gripes “I rode to Sing Sing that night and there suffered all night.” Accompanied by an engraver’s proof of Remington’s “Shot”

ALS, one page, 7 x 9, New Rochelle, July 1, no year. Letter addressed to “My dear Captain.” In full: “I rode to Sing Sing that night and there suffered all night—came home by rail next day and have had the most awful time since with an abscess which has not yet abated. Never had so much trouble in my life. Will be a little late with a ‘bloody 7th’ but will do ‘em up yet.” Accompanied by a hardcover first edition of Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail by Theodore Roosevelt, featuring illustrations by Remington, and a 9 x 11.75 engraver’s proof of Remington’s illustration entitled “Shot,” pictured on page 161. Letter is in fine condition; the book rates very good, with scattered cover wear, partially detached hinges, and scattered toning and dampstaining; the print exhibits toning and damp staining to edges.

Remington’s abscess was caused by, well, an excess of food and drink that led to his obesity and a variety of health concerns. The problem was exacerbated by his regular attendance of various dinners, which helped to advance his career but also, understandably, the problem. Around the time of this letter, Remington also moved to his estate, Endion, which gave him more studio space and, he the opportunity for more exercise. In 1887, he signed on to create 83 illustrations for TR’s book, included here. This assignment gave Remington’s career a big boost and forged a lifelong connection with Roosevelt. The artist proof is in keeping with his outdoor themes and focus on animals of the West. A unique ensemble of items from one of America’s most notable artists. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
