Description

Love, under Snoopy’s watchful eye

Original hand-inked four-panel Peanuts daily comic strip, dated February 2, 1963, on an off-white 27.5 x 6 sheet of artist’s cardstock. The strip depicts a bird meeting his love mate outside of Snoopy’s dog house, with Snoopy commenting, “Their parents don’t approve of their being together,” after the couple disappears inside.Signed “Schulz,” in the last panel. Matted and framed to an overall size of 32.75 x 11. In fine condition.

Snoopy’s fondness for his feathered friends extended beyond his relationship with Woodstock. In fact, Charlie Brown’s dog began befriending birds in the early 1960s, when they started using his doghouse to rest during migrations, to nest, or simply to play cards, as fowl are known to do. Like the relationship between Schulz and the majority of his audience, no words were ever exchanged between Snoopy and the birds—they instinctively understood each other. Though on the surface just a benign strip, a deeper look reveals a hint of political undertow as the conservative ways of the past began to give way to more “radical” ideas in 1963. As for the star of this strip? What can be said about Snoopy...one of the most instantly recognizable cartoon characters in the world and certainly the most desirable of all of Schulz’s creations! Oversized. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
