Description

The ‘Cowboy Artist’ reaches for fame: “I want to illustrate more of Mr. Parkman’s works”

American artist (1861–1909) best known for his paintings and sculptures of the American West, and for his depictions of cowboy life in particular. ALS, one page, 6.5 x 9, September 22. In full, "Gentlemen - I have just received the copy of the 'Oregon Trail' - for which I thank you. I am delighted with it. To my mind it is the best cover I have ever seen. Its absolute. The drawings 'come' in perfect shape and have been well arranged. I hope the book will be a tremendous success since I want to illustrate more of Mr. Parkman’s works. You can have the drawing I sent also with my compliments and also you have my thanks and gratitude for so well doing a book in which I shall always feel a great pride.” Letter has been professionally inlaid into a 10 x 13 off-white sheet. In fine condition, with light intersecting mailing folds and a trivial light stain to top margin.

Late in 1891, Remington was commissioned to create illustrations for a new edition of Francis Parkman’s book, The Oregon Trail, due to his extensive knowledge of the western United States. The addition of Remington’s work was a boon to the artist, whose previous works had mainly been seen only in magazines. Although he is considered one of the greatest painters of western subjects and his career was steadily on the rise in the 1890s, his participation in Parkman’s book certainly helped advance his reputation, and his humble gratitude is made plain here. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
