World-renowned photographer sends cross-country comfort

Important photographer (1879–1973) who was one of the pioneering figures in the field of “art” photography. In 2006, a copy of his 1904 photograph The Pond—Moonlight sold at auction for $2.9 million, setting a new record for the medium. ALS signed “E. S.,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Museum of Modern Art letterhead, no date. Consoling letter to Henry Flannery, written in his difficult to decipher hand. Letter begins: “How I wish I could be out there to put my arm around you.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Steichen’s hand, signed above the return address area, “Steichen.” In fine condition.
