Description

The first female Justice responds to a critic: “To what extent my own past experiences subconsciously affect my analysis, I cannot say”

Uncommon TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Supreme Court letterhead, February 27, 1985. Letter to an Orthodox reverend regarding personal experiences reflecting on her decisions. In full: “I cannot answer your question because I cannot speak for others on this Court, past or present. I have always assumed that each of us in life carries with us the whole range of our life experiences and beliefs, which unconsciously or otherwise affects our approach to solving problems. In my job I make every effort to be objective in resolving the legal issues before me. To what extent my own past experiences subconsciously affect my analysis, I cannot say.” In fine condition.
