Description

Unique signed photo of Truman accepting membership in the Military Order of the World Wars

Vintage matte-finish 10 x 8 photo of a ceremony in which President Truman is being presented with a lifetime membership in the Military Order of the World Wars in the Oval Office, signed in ink by Truman, and by the other gentleman present in the photo: E. Kemper Carter, Arthur Brookfield, William H. Stamon, David Sholtz, George C. Marshall, and Edwin S. Bettelheim, Jr. In fine condition, with Sholtz’s signature very light, but mostly legible, and some light adhesive remnants to top edge.

Established in 1919 to promote the welfare of the United States, the Military Order of the World Wars is a patriotic nonpartisan organization which holds that it is “nobler to serve than to be served.” Added in an unknown hand beneath Truman’s signature is the date October 25, 1945—just a little over a month after the official end of World War II—signifying that the piece, awarding during the Order’s annual convention, was signed as president. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
