Description

One composer on another: “I have a subject that will not lack interest…It will not be about Gounod”

Prolific and prodigiously talented French Romantic composer (1835–1921) of such timeless works as the “Organ” Symphony, the opera Samson et Dalila, and the perennial concert favorite Carnival of the Animals. ALS in French, signed “C. Saint-Saëns,” one page, lightly-lined graph, 8.25 x 10.5, November 9, 1921. In full: “It is agreed for the article. I have a subject that will not lack interest. But I cannot think about it right now; it will be, I think next week that I will be able to take care of it. Few musical examples would be necessary. It will not be about Gounod, I leave that to your collaborator. Should he be able to treat it as this great benefactor of French theatrical music deserves it.” In fine condition, with a professional repair to almost complete central horizontal separation, lightly affecting a single line of text, and a rusty paperclip mark to top edge.

Charles-François Gounod was a French composer, best known for his Ave Maria as well as his operas Faust and Roméo et Juliette. He died in 1893. Saint-Saëns died of pneumonia on December 16, 1921, barely one month after discussing his future plans. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
