Description

War-dated volume from Fillmore’s library

Signed book: An Universal History, from the Earliest Account of Time, Vol. XVIII (only). London: T. Osborne, A. Millar, and J. Osborn, 1748, 5.25 x 8.5, 664 pages. Signed in ink on the title page, “Millard Fillmore, Dec. 1, 1862.” Book also contains eight fold-out maps. In very good condition, with some mild toning and foxing to signed page, and some scattered light toning and soiling to inside pages. The original covers are not present, but the book has been handsomely rebound using more modern boards.

This volume originates from Fillmore’s personal library, and the Civil War was raging as the former Chief Executive signed his name to the volume. Though he commanded a group of Union home guards in upstate New York during the conflict, Fillmore himself was opposed to Lincoln and his policies. Politics aside, Fillmore was also a self-admitted bookworm, and was instrumental in the 1862 creation of the Buffalo Historical Society (now the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society). He served as their first president and is known to have donated historical volumes from his own collection to the group. A book of history, signed by a former US president during one of America’s darkest chapters! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
