American soldier and statesman (1821–1875) who served as a general in the Civil War and as the last Confederate Secretary of War. Previously, Breckinridge had served as vice president under Buchanan—at 36, Breckinridge was the youngest man ever to have held this office—and as a senator from Kentucky. Ink signature, “John C.
