Description

Baseball H.O.F. Tom Yawkey boasts of his broadcasters: “We have two young announcers in Curt Gowdy and Bob Delaney”

TLS signed “T. A. Yawkey,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Boston Red Sox letterhead, April 12, 1951. Letter to a college student interested in getting into baseball as an announcer, after having no luck getting admitted to medical school. In part: “However, our own situation here, from an announcing point of view, is well taken care of at the moment. We have two young announcers in Curt Gowdy and Bob Delaney, both of whom have been doing a fine job. Also, we have a good many young male employees in other departments, so at the present time there is not a position available.” Gowdy had just begun his 15 year career as the head man for Red Sox broadcasts, before moving on to a 10 year stint with NBC for Game of the Week. Gowdy would also be presented the Ford Frick Award in 1984. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine, clean, bright condition. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
