Description

Monet helps purchase Carriere’s “The Death of Christ”

ALS in French, one page, 5.25 x 6.5, March 26, 1903. Letter to Mr. Gallimard. In full: “I am sending you the sum of Two hundred francs for my participation in the purchase of ‘The Death of Christ’ by Eugene Carriere. I cordially extend to you my hand and pray you believe I am totally devoted to you.” Beautifully cloth matted and framed by Gallery of History, with a color portrait of Monet, and plaques bearing a biography of Monet and a translation of the letter, to an overall size of 29 x 21.5. In fine condition, with light intersecting folds and ink varying from bold to rather light, although readable in its entirety.

When one is as masterful as Monet, it is difficult to imagine there would be anyone who would catch his eye. Yet Carriere succeeded in doing just that, with the French Impressionist participating in the purchase of a piece from the French Symbolist. Elaborate in its presentation, at the core of this array is a unique revelation: Monet’s admiration of one of his peers. Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
