Vintage 5 x 4 original photo of Cody sitting under a tent with a soldier standing behind him, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Col. Louce, W. F. Cody, ‘Buffalo Bill.’” In good condition, with moderate contrast to signature, overall heavy rippling to photo from adhesive and mounting remnants on reverse, invisible archival tape over portion of inscription, some scattered light chipping to edges, as well as a couple small edge tears.
Presumably the man pictured with Cody is Colonel Louce, and although his identity is lost, his attire (as well as the physical features of Cody) offer evidence that this image dates to around the turn of the 20th century. The relaxed appearance of both men (compared to the look one might expect from a zealous admirer) also suggests familiarity. Louce was probably a member of his “Wild West Show” incarnations, though his Union-style cap may also hint that the pair’s relationship reaches even farther into history, perhaps as far as Cody’s days with the 7th Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War. An uncommon, remarkably clear, and distinctly unique image of the famed American showman in his element. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
