Description

James Montgomery Flagg

American artist and illustrator (1877–1960) best known for his iconic image of Uncle Sam saying “I Want You” on a World War I recruiting poster. Impressive original ink and watercolor work by Flagg, on an off-white 11 x 8.5 sheet, signed along the bottom, “J. M. F.” Work depicts Flagg walking down a town road, with his art supplies strapped to his back, and waving at an elderly couple on a porch as he passes by, with the elderly gentleman saying, “’That’s the sketch artist stayin’ at the Mansion house—I’d like fer him to take a pitcher of you Hattie—He only charges five dollars! He’s towerin’ New England—Poor feller.’” In fine condition, with a mild overall shade of toning, and light intersecting folds. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
