James Monroe and John Quincy Adams

Manuscript DS, signed “James Monroe” as president and “John Quincy Adams” as Secretary of State, one page, 8.75 x 13.5, February 17, 1823. President Monroe appoints Edward Tiffin a Surveyor of the Public Lands in the states of Ohio, Indiana, and in the Michigan Territory for a period of four years. Signed at the conclusion by Monroe, and countersigned by Secretary of State Adams. Matted and framed to an overall size of 13.75 x 19. Detached and separated second integral page is attached to the reverse of frame in its Christie’s sales sleeve. In very good condition, with uniform toning, with a couple of heavier spots, a few small separations along folds and a couple creases. The white paper seal is toned, but crisp and intact. Both signatures are dark and clear. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
