Description

The man who led Louiis XVI to the guillotine

French Revolutionist, military commander and brewer (1752-1809). While not considered a great success as a military man, he was loved by his countrymen for running a group of successful breweries. Ink endorsement, “Santerre,” on the left edge of a French military document, dated January 25, 1793, bearing a very rare “Liberte Egalite ou la Mort” cancellation. In fine condition, with a couple of rough edges, and a bit of mild toning and soiling.

Santerre is reported to have been the Revolutionary commander who escorted Louis XVI to the guillotine, however accounts differ as to whether he treated the doomed king with respect or contempt. This well-preserved document is dated just four days after that famous execution. RRAuction COA.
