Handsome pen and ink quarter length portrait of Calvin Coolidge on a 9.25 x 12.5 off-white sheet affixed to its original 10.75 x 14 mount, signed and inscribed in pencil (partially on the mount), “To T. D. Robinson, with regards, Calvin Coolidge.” Matted, to an overall size of 16 x 20. In fine condition.
Coolidge was known as the least talkative of the presidents. The story is often told of a young woman sitting next to Coolidge at a dinner party who confided to him she had bet she could get at least three words of conversation from him. He is said to have retorted, "You lose." In this masterful portrait of the laconic Yankee, Mr. Coolidge is positioned in partial profile, typical of photos and drawings of him; his gaze is particularly clear and direct and his lips are, of course, closed.
