Born Bartolomeo Alberto Cappellari (1765-1846), he was Pope of the Catholic Church from 1831 to 1846. Strongly conservative and traditionalist, he opposed democratic and modernizing reforms in the Papal States and throughout Europe, seeing them as fronts for revolutionary leftism, and sought to strengthen the religious and political authority of the papacy. Partial ALS in Italian, signed “Gregorius PP. XVI,” one page, 7 x 3, July 14, 1834. Partial letter most likely written to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, signed at the conclusion by the Holy Father, closing with a benediction. Double suede matted and framed with a portrait of Gregory, and a small medallion, to an overall size of 13.5 x 21 In fine condition, with light show-through from writing on reverse.
