Blackfoot chief (1872–1934) best known for the durable though still-controversial claim that he served as one of models for sculptor James Earle Fraser in creating the composite Native American portrait on the “Buffalo” nickel. Uncommon vintage 3.5 x 5.5 postcard photo, signed in fountain pen with the chief’s three-character pictogram of two rifles and a horned calf. On the reverse in correspondence written by the signature’s original recipient reading, “This is a picture of the Indian whose head is on the nickles [sic] we use. I had him sign his name on this for you.” Some scattered light silvering to darker areas of image and background, and some light rippling, otherwise fine condition.
