Early ALS as senator, one page, lightly-lined, 8 x 9.25, May 5, 1832. Tyler writes to an unidentified gentleman, likely a Virginia lawyer handling the case of a wounded navy veteran named Neagle who asserts that he lost his eyesight during his naval service. In part: “After receiving your letter of the 30th ultimo, I called on the Secretary of the Navy [Levi Woodbury] and called his attention to Neagle’s case. The enclosed answer presents the objections to allowing it. No difficulty will or can exist if proof is favorable showing the intent of the wound—If he lost an eye in the service, or if by reason of wounds on the head his eye sight has failed and he will exhibit proof of this, there will be no difficulty in his case.” Chipping, creasing and toning to edges, previous intersecting folds, one lightly affecting signature, scattered light toning, and a few lines of text light, but legible, otherwise very good condition. A much earlier letter than usually found, Tyler was serving as a senator from Virginia at the time of this letter, nine years before his election as William Henry Harrison vice president and his own subsequent presidency.
