African-American explorer (1866–1955) who was a member of the first party to (possibly) reach the North Pole in 1909. Vintage fountain pen signature, “Matthew A. Henson,” and inscription and date in another hand, “To Robt. Oppel, 3/25/54,” on an off-white 5.25 x 3.25 sheet folded down from a larger size and affixed to a 5.75 x 4 sheet. In very good condition, with light rippling and show-through from adhesive to reverse and scattered light staining. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
