Remarkable ALS, as President, signed “Ronnie,” one page both sides, 6.25 x 4, gilt embossed Presidential seal letterhead, May 24 (no year mentioned, but 1984). Letter to Marion Grimm, widow of famed Chicago Cubs first baseman Charlie Grimm who had died in November of the previous year, in full: “I’m a little late but I’ve been doing some touring around winding up with a trip to the ranch. I hope that ranch will always be part of my life. It was just beautiful for the week we were there and we saw it from horseback. I’m glad to learn about Wrigley Field and your ceremony with Charlie’s ashes. Bless you for thinking of that and I know Charley must be happy to be with the Cubs and with you. The Lord has promised that we must simply go through a door to a place where there is no pain or sorrow and where we shall all meet again. Nancy joins me in warmest wishes and regards.” Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope addressed in Reagan’s hand and printed with his Los Angeles address.
Reagan became good friends with Charlie Grimm while he was announcing for the Cubs and Grimm was the team’s manager. Grimm passed away from cancer on November 15, 1983 and, abiding by his final wish, his ashes were scattered over Wrigley Field shortly thereafter. This letter to Grimm’s widow was written while Reagan was enjoying a respite at his ranch following an exhaustive month that included a trip to China, the first visit by an American president to that country since Nixon’s in 1972. In fine condition, with a few stray ink spots and a small spot of soiling above the letterhead. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
