Description

The ‘Old Pretender’

Claimant of the thrones of Scotland and England (1688–1766); his Jacobite supporters referred to him as James III of England and VIII of Scotland, while others dismissed him as the “Old Pretender.” ALS in French, signed “Jacques R,” one page, 7.25 x 9.5, October 9, 1736. Letter to the “Duc de Bourbon.” In part: “I am very touched at this new mark of affection and the continuation of your friendship for me. What I have for you and your household gives me a deep feeling of real pleasure at the birth of the Prince of Condé and causes me much anguish over the health of Madame the Duchesse your wife.” Letter is affixed by the left edge of the second integral page to a slighlty larger sheet of heavier brown stock, with reverse of second page bearing an address panel in another hand. also accompanied by a full translation. In very good condition, with scattered toning and foxing, intersecting folds, one through single letter of signature, and a pencil notation under signature.
