Description

The new governor, testing the presidential waters, finds himself having “to deny almost daily the charge of being a candidate”

ALS as governor, signed “Ron,” one page, 8.5 x 11, 1967 West Coast Latvian Song Festival letterhead, no date. Letter to Karl regarding out of town appearances. In part: “I’ll see that Home Brundages letter gets to the man who is planning what I can & can’t do in the line of out of state appearances. I’m sure you realize there are many problems in connection with such appearances in addition to the plain fact of time. For one who has to deny almost daily the charge of being a candidate it’s hard to go across town let alone across country.” Reagan also adds a short note across top edge. In fine condition, with some slight edge toning, mainly to top edge.

Reagan was sworn in as governor of California in January 1967. Shortly after the beginning of his term, Reagan tested the presidential waters in 1968 as part of a "Stop Nixon" movement, hoping to cut into Nixon's Southern support and become a compromise candidate if neither Nixon nor second-place Nelson Rockefeller received enough delegates to win on the first ballot at the Republican convention. However, by the time of the convention Nixon had 25 more delegates than he needed to secure the nomination, and Reagan ended in third place. Reagan served as governor until 1975, again running for president in 1976 before winning office in 1980. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
