Description

Sending thanks after receiving the vice presidential nomination: “I didn’t know I had so many friends until this happened”

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, U. S. Senate letterhead, August 16, 1944. Truman sends thanks for well wishes after being named the vice presidential candidate in 1944. In part: “I cannot tell you how much I appreciated your letter of congratulations. I didn’t know I had so many friends until this happened. I have been snowed under with letters and telegrams, hence the delay in thanking you.” On July 21, 1944, United States Senator Harry S. Truman was nominated to be President Franklin D. Roosevelt's vice-presidential running-mate in his bid to be re-elected for a fourth term. Truman's predecessor as Vice President, the incumbent Henry Wallace, was unpopular with some of the leaders of the Democratic Party, who didn't like his liberal politics and considered him unreliable and eccentric in general. In fine condition. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
