Astronaut (1930–1967) who was the first American to walk in space and who died in the flash fire that killed the entire Apollo 1 crew. Color 10.25 x 13.25 photo, matted to an overall size of 15.5 x 19.5, of White in the middle of his historic space walk during the Gemini 4 mission, signed and inscribed in black felt tip on the mat, “To B. G. McNabb, Best wishes, Edward H. White II, Gemini IV, 3 June ‘65.” Framed to an overall size of 17.5 x 21.5. Byron G. McNabb was Operations Manager at the Air Force Missile Test Center at Cape Canaveral (1955-1963) and Director of Operations (1962-1963), responsible for all the orbital flights of Project Mercury. McNabb was traditionally the last man to shake the astronauts hand as they stepped from the trailer to the launch pad elevator. In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light toning and spotting to mat. An unusually large signature and image, combined with a direct connection to NASA official, makes this an “out of this world” offering!
