Revolutionary War-dated LS signed “Th: Jefferson,” one page, 7.25 x 9, January 15, 1781. Letter to Maryland governor Lee. In full: “As the dangers which threaten our Western frontiers the ensuing spring render it necessary that we could send thither Col. Crockett’s Battalion, at present on guard at Frederick Town, but raised for Western Service. I thought it necessary to give your Excellency previous information thereof that other forces may be provided in time to succeed to their duties. Cap. Read’s troop of Horse if necessary, may be continued a while longer on guard.” Second integral page bears an address panel in another hand to Lee, as well as red wax seal remnants.
