Amazing and extremely uncharacteristic vintage matte-finish 7 x 11 world-recognized photo of Albert Einstein sticking out his tongue, signed in fountain pen in the lower border and in German rhyme, “Diese Geste Dir gefällt, Weil sie gelt der Menschenwelt, Der Civilist kann sich’s leisten, Kein Diplomat kann sich’s erdreisten. Ihr Freund und dankbarer Zuhörer,” translated to “This gesture you will like, Because it is aimed at all of humanity. A civilian can afford to do what no diplomat would dare. Your loyal and grateful listener, A. Einstein ‘53.” Consignor notes that this very photo was given to Howard K. Smith, noted journalist, probably while he was chief correspondent for CBS and stationed in London before he resettled back in the United States in 1957-8. The story has it that on Einstein’s 72nd birthday, UPI photographer Arthur Sasse tried mightily to convince the physicist to smile for the camera. Instead, Einstein stuck out his tongue. The signature and inscription on this copy of that iconic image is a bit light due to irregular ink flow, but the writing is still completely legible. Scattered, light corner creasing and border soiling is evident, but the piece remains in fine condition. As for the recipient of this wonderful gem, Howard K. Smith, it is said that, in his later years, Einstein regularly listened to an hour long news program that was hosted by Smith every Sunday, and refused to allow visitors to interrupt it.
