Description

Largely penned musical quote from the great Stravinsky to his translator

Large AMQS on two adjoining sheets of Hotel Pierre letterhead, 11 x 7.5. In this rare offering, the great Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) pens large bars of music from an unidentified work. The famous composer inscribed at the top of the document, “To Lucia Davidova, my sincerest thanks and the row of the Flood,” then signed at the bottom “I. Stravinsky, NY May 4th/62.” Over time, Stravinsky’s writing has lightened slightly, but his distinguished penmanship remains entirely legible. As for condition, what was once a complete bisecting vertical separation benefits from professional repair, and a small area of paper loss can be seen at lower left; toning from a previous display is evident throughout, yet the item’s visual properties remain very good. Thoughtful preservation is also manifest in that the page has been adhered to a like-sized sheet, which in turn is affixed to a like-sized board. “The Flood,” a 1962 musical play, was a short biblical drama by Stravinsky that was originally written as a television opera in response to a commission by CBS. The recipient of this token, Miss Davidova, is credited with having translated The Correspondence of Vera and Igor Stravinsky from the Stravinskys’ native Russian to English. RRAuction COA.
