LS in Gujarati, signed “Bapu’s blessings,” one page, 6.5 x 6.5, November 17, 1928. We find in this letter very specific insight into the “method” of Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948). A proud advocate of nonviolence and self-control, Gandhi was of the opinion that natural therapeutic techniques were essential, not only to preserve one’s health, but so as to better cultivate one’s self-discipline. To this end, the proud leader also bore an affinity for employing warm baths for therapeutic purposes. As we read his handwritten note, it seems as though Gandhi impressed these curative measures upon his friends. In part, the letter (translated) to Doctor Behram Kahmbatta reads: “It is good that you have reached comfortably and it gives me immense happiness to know that your health has improved. If you have any new experiences regarding water therapy please let me know. Maintain the improvement in your health.” Gandhi’s familiar “Bapu’s blessings” closes the message, and the black ink writing remains strong throughout, generally unaffected by the passage of more than eighty years. The page itself demonstrates very good condition with scattered, light foxing and spotting, as well as two mailing folds, and a couple of small stamps and notations. Incidentally, other letters between Gandhi and Dr. Khambatta (or his wife) reveal that the good doctor was often ill. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
